Español!

¡HOLA AMIGOS!

So I really dont know what to write!!! I have been thinking about this all week and my mind just keeps drawing a blank.

So our first investigator turned out to be out next maestro! :( So upset, but actually happy? Ya I know I make no sense what so ever. But its nice because he, Hermano Muñoz, knows what we need to work on while we are teaching.

Here at the CCM, I feel like my brain is just a big fat sponge! I have learned so much Español and I feel like I have had about 3 years in Español now. But I know that I could not speak it without the spirit here. I fully believe that the Holy Ghost can help you do anything in this life, and for me, that is speaking Español.

We play so much volleyball as a district! Its kind of our "thing". 15D is known for our mad volleyball skills. Actually, we all really stink, but its still fun :)

I eat way to much chips and salsa, but here in Mexico, its the REAL deal man! Such good salsa and has the perfect amount of spice :)

I am so beyond ready to get to Chile! Even if my maestro told me just how crazy fast the Chileans speak. Jajajajajaja! I cant wait to be a crazy Español speaker. Oh and I know that Germany won the world cup! My whole district begged our maestro to tell us the score!

On Sunday we had a devotional that was broadcasted from here and Elder Saldivar from the 70 spoke! He gave such a great talk about being an example. We all need to remember that people are constantly watching us and that being in example/representing Christ is a big deal. On Sunday, in relief society, the talk was about coming to Christ. I feel like in the few short weeks I have been on a mission, I have learned to have so much faith in my Savior. I love Jesus Christ so much and I feel Him all around me. He loves us all so much and I know that the Atonement was done for us individually.

I know that the Gospel is true! I believe it with all my heart and I know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true church on the earth. I am so grateful to be true representative of our Savior and Redeemer. I cant wait to help others find their way back to Him and to know that He loves them so much. Pray is real and specific prayers are answered. I love you all and the support you show. Have a great week! And read DyC 18:10!

Amor,
Hermana Burnham

P.S. Please keep Hermana Bills in your prayers. She just received some bad news today and needs the comfort that prayers can bring. Gracias.

Free NACHOS!!

Hola everyone!!! How are things in the good ol USA!?!?! Hahaha :)
Well, here in Mexico, things are pretty dandy. I was on a flight from Phoenix to here with about 40 missionaries! So I was happy that I was not alone :) The bus ride from the airport to the CCM was beyond terrifying. I was pretty sure we were going to run someone over or hit another car. People just cut each other off like there is no tomorrow!

The food at the CCM is pretty good. There is a toast and nutella bar so not too much to complain about! Especially if I get to have that for Breakfast everyday! And beans and rice are served at every meal. I feel like I am home!!! But dont eat the Costco pizza here. It will make you sick. Good thing I have Elders who prepared for that and had drugs for me to take!

The Spanish is going good. I dont know about 50% of what the teacher is saying. And ya. The teachers here ONLY talk in Spanish. So you either catch on or just sit there like a slug. I actually like that though. I write down the words I dont know that he says and then find them in my dictionary. Our teacher is Hermano Garza. He is a really cool guy and can talk in English really well too. I love the way he teaches and I have learned to much from him. He is great!

The first few days were just orientation and I feel like we had millions. Then on the 4th we had our first investigator to teach. IN ALL SPANISH! I did have a little meltdown that day because lets face it, I dont speak Spanish. All in all, the lesson me y Hermana Meads gave was terrible. It wasnt even Spanish. It was Spanglish! But by Monday, our lesson was so much better! I felt the spirit literally work through me and I said words in Spanish that I didnt even know! Best feeling in the world to have that happen to you.

We have 8 elders in my district and 4 hermanas. Every one is from Utah except for 3 of us. And Elder Sheeeeeeen (Shin) is a convert of only 2 years!!! He is a really good elder and actually our District Leader. But the missionaries are all awesome. I have the best district ever.

Sorry I dont have much time, but things in the CCM are great. I love my district so much. We just laugh all the time and play fun games of volleyball during the gym time. I actually scored 3 times and if you know me well, you know that I dont do sports! Hahahahaha! AT ALL! So I was pretty excited about that. And just remember, nacho libre means free nachos. At least I think it does... Libre means free though so there ya go!!!

Thanks everyone for the support you show me! I LOVE YOU ALL!!!

Love,
Hermana Burnham

Adios Amigos!

Well, folks. This is it! I get set apart tonight as a missionary for La Iglesia de Jesu Cristo de los Santos de los Ultimos Dias! :)

I just wanted to thank everyone that helped me get to this point! My family, friends, people in my 2 wonderful wards, and the ones who went to Chile on their missions that made me even MORE excited to go! You all have helped me in some way get to this point in my life and I feel like I can't thank you enough. I love you all so much.

These 4 months of having my call have been stressful, fun, fast, long, crazy, and all around amazing. When I first got my call, I swear it was going to take FOREVER for me to leave and now I am just shocked that I leave in just 2 days and get set apart tonight. If you know me, you know that I don't really "sugar-coat" things and so when asked how these past 4 months have felt all I can say is, AHHHH! For anyone who is thinking about going on a mission or waiting to leave, my one piece of advice is to just push through. Satan will try to stop you and fill your head with selfish thoughts, because he knows that you are about to do something incredible. He will put things in front of that, at the time, seem much better than serving a mission. But I promise that if you just push through and remember that you are serving your Heavenly Father and through Him, you will bless many lives, including your own. And I encourage you to pray. A LOT. Heavenly Father has answered so many of my prayers when I've been worried and has always comforted me.

I love Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ so much and I know that they love me. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is the only true church on the earth today. The prophet Joseph Smith did restore the gospel and I will always be grateful that he did. I know that the work done in temples is sacred and that in temples families are sealed for eternity. I am so excited to share what I know with the people of Chile and I can't wait to serve our Heavenly Father and help others feel His love.

Chile Concepcion South Mission!

In case you couldn't tell, I got called to the Chile Concepcion South Mission!!! YIPPEE!!! :)

So the day I got my call, last Saturday, was a CRAZY day! I worked 5 hours and then raced home to rip open that mail box and hold my call. But, the minute I opened up that mail box.... Nothing. Absolutely NOTHING! I, of course, panicked. I panicked bad. I ran downstairs (I live in a LDS family's basement) and went into my room thinking they put the letter on my bed. Nope. Not on my bed. Then I really freaked out. I was just like, "you have got to be kidding me". But then I was like, maybe they have it upstairs in their house. So I asked the random uncle playing his guitar on the back porch (NO JOKE!) and he took me inside to look in the pile of mail. Sure enough, it was in there!!! I ripped it from his hands and literally SCREAMED happiness! Hahaha! I am pretty sure the little ones are still curious as to why this random girl was screaming over mail :)

So later that night at 6:00 p.m., I had about 10 friends over and my immediate family on Skype to be there when I found out where I would be for 18 months of my life. I cannot even begin to describe the feeling I had when I saw those words. Chile Concepcion South Mission. WOAH! I instantly felt the spirit confirm to me that yes. This is it! OF COURSE! How did I not know this before!? Of course I am supposed to go to Chile! It just felt so right! I actually read it before I read aloud to everyone :) I wasn't going to hide it. The excitement was just too much to handle! And so I read it, and of course, my mom was crying. Hahahaha! Tears of happiness though! I am sure of it :) I also had a lot of my friends and family guess where I would go and only about 2-3 of them guessed Chile! Whenever people asked me where I wanted to go, I always said, "I don't care! As long as I speak Spanish!" Well, I got my wish! And personally, South America was my top choice :) I think the Lord and also the Brethren up in Utah really take this into consideration, but then again, you will go where you are most needed!

I leave for the Mexico MTC on July 2 and will be speaking Spanish! Kind of a longer wait than I anticipated, but that's okay! I have more time to prepare and be with my family. Crazy kind of story though. My sister Holly (you can read her blog here) opened her call last year on February 18th. I opened mine on February 15th. She reported to the MTC on July 3rd. I report on July 2nd. CRAZY! It will be 2.5 years total of not seeing mi hermana (like my spanish?). But we have eternity with each other, so I am not too worried :)

I am just so grateful for the call that I have received! I know that I am doing one of the greatest things I can ever do in life and that is serving the Lord. I can't wait to help those awesome Chileans come to know the Gospel and that families are together forever. And to also know that we can become like Christ through the power of the Atonement. I love this gospel so much! I know that it brings families together and that many blessings come to those who strive everyday to live the gospel! I love this church so much and I love all of you! Have a great weekend!

Hola, mi nombre es Hermana Burnham! (Just practicing my Spanish!) And I also found out that my co-workers little sister is in this mission and a guy in my ward just got back from this mission! CRAZY! AND, a girl that lives about 5 minutes away from me got the same exact call and opened it the same day and we leave the same day. Last small world thing, my mission president doesn't start until July 1st, and he lives in Gilbert. I need to go find him..... :)

Sittin', Waitin', Wishin'.....

Where is my call!?! Hahaha just kidding. It's not supposed to be here until Friday or Saturday. But that doesn't mean I won't check my mail box EVERYDAY! I am just getting anxious I guess :)

So while I was in Utah for my Grandpa's funeral, I got a text on Friday from my Bishop saying that on Thursday my call was assigned! YIPPEE! Holy cow. It's just crazy to think that those general authorities looked at my pictures and picked where I will serve for 18 months. It's very unreal to me. I still don't believe that my call is gonna be here in 2-3 days. So my days have been spent eating.... A LOT. Like, really. A LOT. Fast food is so tempting. I am stress/anxious/nervous/excited eating. Is that even possible?! For me, yes. Yes it is! Hahaha, well besides that, I got a nice hair cut, or in other words, its all GONE! But that's okay. Maybe it's missionary looking? And all this fast food has given me some fun little fortune cookies :) 2-3 MORE DAYS!!!

It's all gone! But that's okay. And of course I didn't take this picture at work..... in the bathroom.....

Me? A Missionary?

So today I FINALLY turned in my mission papers!! EEEKKKK!!! I cannot believe this is really happening. I guess I should probably give a bit of a background story to this. Right? :)

My whole life I never really ever thought about going on a mission. It was always at age 21 that girls could leave and let's be honest, I knew that I would not want to leave that late. I just knew my choice already. Then in October 2012, the mission age changed to 18 for young men and 19 for young ladies. When I heard this announcement, I thought it was incredible! Boys can leave earlier and girls can leave earlier! That was so cool and just awesome for so many out there wanting to serve! For me, I started to consider the thought a little bit. I just said, "If I feel like I should go at that time, then I'll go."

A few months later my sister Holly received her call to the San Pablo, Philippines mission. I was beyond excited for her! But by this point, I had made my decision that I was NOT going on a mission. People would always ask, "So, are you gonna be like your sister and go too?" To be honest, I was super bugged that people kept asking me. I was inconsiderate and rude and got upset. Why couldn't I just be Robyn and make my own life choices? Let's just say that was a weird time for me.

Later that year, 2013, I went to Belize to help build a school. That experience was a crazy one at that! I had some amazing opportunities to meet the most humble people ever and know what it is like to serve others 24/7 for 2 weeks. After the first week though, I got REALLY homesick. Like, really homesick! To the point where I just wanted to go home. I didn't care. Then a really good friend of mine on the trip helped me realize something really important. I was there to serve others. It wasn't about me for those 2 weeks. It was about providing the children of Corozal, Belize with a better school. That's when it really hit me that I was being selfish and needed to focus my attention on others and not myself. I finished what I started and ended up not wanting to come home in the end! I grew to love it so much. Once I was home though, the thought of a mission was still a definite no. I thought, "I got so homesick in Belize for just 2 weeks! How on earth could I do a mission for 18 months!?".

I then moved to Mesa in June for school. Moving to Mesa was so AWESOME! I loved it the minute I moved down here. In August, about the time I started school, the thought of a mission hit me really good. It was just like a little push from the spirit saying, "Hey. You should go on a mission". I instantly was just like, nah. I'll think about it more. Then November came and I had been praying about a mission for a while then. I can remember the moment when it was like AH HA! I am going on a mission! I was praying one morning and the spirit was so overwhelming that I just knew. I was going to serve a mission! The thought was so exciting and just made me so happy. My family was VERY shocked though. Just a few months previous I was so against going on a mission. I guess that the Lord just had better plans for me :) So in November I started my mission papers. This is when life got really tricky. I was exposed to many things that I had never been exposed to in my life. So many temptations came flooding my way that I never thought I would have to face. I am not going to sugar coat this at all and say it was so easy to just fill them out and turn them in. It was HARD. There came a time about 3 weeks ago where every other day I was saying no to going. I can honestly say that Satan was trying his hardest. He did not want me to turn my papers in and was trying everything to get me to change my mind. Also, my papers got delayed by about 2 months because of some medical problems. It was not an easy time and I was frustrated. Honestly, so frustrated that I couldn't handle it and almost just gave up.

Well, low and behold, I got through it all! One day, about 2 weeks ago, I decided to go to the temple and do baptisms. It had been a good month and half since the last time I had gone. There, another big confirmation came to me that I needed to go. Nothing was going to stop me! And so with the help of family and friends (you know who you are) I FINALLY got to the end! Or the beginning I guess you could say! :) I finished my papers all the way, met with my bishop, and then today met with my stake president.

Today was still a crazy day though. This morning I found out that my sweet Grandpa Burnham had passed away in the night. My Grandpa was the most patient and caring man I had ever known. He loved Jesus Christ and our Heavenly Father so much and always had the spirit with him. My Grandpa was such a hard worker and to the point where he never had one single weed in his garden! :) My Grandpa also had the best raspberries. Haha! When I found this out this morning though, I was honestly quite upset. It really hit me that I would not see my Grandpa until the next life. And then it really hit me. I would see my Grandpa again!!! How wonderful is that!?! This isn't the end! And, my Grandpa was finally with his sweetheart looking down on all of us! This was even MORE of a confirmation to go on a mission. I want EVERYONE to know that families can be together forever and that you will see your loved ones again. How incredible is this knowledge?!! After this, I drove the 30 minute drive to my stake presidents house and had the BEST interview I have ever had before. So many wonderful things were said and President Smith was just fantastic!

So around 1:00 p.m. today, February 2, 2013, my mission papers were sent to Salt Lake City, Utah! Oh my goodness. I cannot even describe the joy that I feel right now. I cried tears of happiness the whole drive home. And I swear the sun was shining brighter today :) I know that the gospel changes lives in the most unexpected ways! And I know that the Lord has a way better plan for us than we do. He knows us all individually and loves us all so much. He wants to see us succeed and to serve everyone around us. I love this gospel and I can't wait to dedicate 18 months of my life to the Lord.

Have a wonderful Sabbath Day everyone and remember the great blessings in your life! And in about 2 weeks, I'll let ya'll know where I go! Don't forget to guess where I'll go :) Write your guesses on my Facebook! I LOVE YOU ALL!!!
